Welcome first year students to UNM-LA! The First Year Experience (FYE) Program is designed to get you comfortable with the campus and with your personal transition to the college culture. Check out the campus. Get involved. Take charge of your life. And enjoy the year!
UNIV 101 is the course that unites all students in FYE. Using the On Course curriculum, it is designed to help you create greater success in college and in life. All students who have placed into a transitional studies course or are attending on a bridge scholarship must enroll in UNIV 101.
In the class, we actively engage in many proven strategies for creating greater academic, professional, and personal success.
Successful Students Make 8 Choices

Entering freshmen whose ACT/SAT scores or UNM-Los Alamos placement test scores indicate a need for college preparatory course work, or entering freshmen with deficiencies in admission requirements, may be required to take Transitional Studies courses before entering their individual programs.
These courses include:
- English 099: Developmental English
- English 100: Writing Standard English
- General Studies 193: Reading for College
- Math 099: Pre-Algebra
- Math 100: Introduction to Algebra
Advisors will help students determine in which courses they should enroll. General university credit will be granted for these skills courses, but credit will not be accepted towards UNM Los Alamos associate degree programs or towards UNM degree programs.
