Accessibility Policies
The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos is committed to the recognition and the proactive pursuit of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). The University makes reasonable accommodation for religious observances, national origin practices of a student, and the known physical or mental limitations of a qualified student, unless such accommodations have the end result of fundamentally altering a program or service or placing an undue hardship on the operation of the University. For more information, visit UNM-Albuquerque’s Accessibility Resource Center at https://arc.unm.edu/ or read UNM’s complete policy on Academic Adjustments for Students with Disabilities at https://policy.unm.edu/university-policies/2000/2310.html.

UNM-Los Alamos recognizes individuals with disabilities as an integral part of a diverse community and is committed to the provision of comprehensive resources to the University community (faculty, staff, and students) in order to create equitable, inclusive, and practical learning environments. Our mission is to provide assistance and support to students with verified disabilities in order to provide equal access to educational programs and opportunities. Accessibility Resources is also committed to providing information and support to faculty and staff about best practices in supporting students with disabilities and maintaining compliance with ADA law.
- Accommodations are not automatic. Students seeking accommodations must initiate the
process, including providing documentation, by meeting with the Academic Student Success
Manager (ASSM).
- Faculty cannot establish accommodations for students in any individual class; after the student has met with the ASSM, faculty will be notified of a student’s accommodations via a formal letter from the ASSM.
- A student’s active communication with the ASSM and their instructors provides an opportunity for success and helps support students more effectively.
- Accommodations are tailored to the individual student.
- Some accommodations such as text conversions can take significant time; please plan ahead and schedule a meeting with the ASSM several weeks before the beginning of the semester.
- Accommodations must be requested each semester by notifying the ASSM directly.
- Many of UNM’s online platforms and software have built-in accessibility features. Contact Kevin Rosenberger, rosenbergerkm@unm.edu, for help learning how to use these tools.
Qualified students with disabilities should contact Student Services at 505-662-5919 to schedule their personal appointment and for information regarding accommodations in the academic and/or employment setting. Visit https://arc.unm.edu/students/purpose.html for FAQs and more.
- Being open to accommodating students
- Meeting with students and the ASSM to discuss the student’s needs
- Implementing reasonable accommodations to provide program access
- Maintaining confidentiality
Any questions regarding an accommodation, or concerns about an accommodation fundamentally altering the academic curriculum, should be discussed with the ASSM. All involved parties will engage in an interactive process to determine if a request is reasonable and ensure that equal access is maintained. Visit https://arc.unm.edu/faculty/accommodation-process-and-faculty-responsibilities.html for FAQs and more.
Course Syllabi
Every instructor should include an official statement in their course syllabus. The suggested syllabus statement should include the following text:
"UNM is committed to providing equitable access to learning opportunities for students with documented disabilities. As your instructor, it is my objective to facilitate an inclusive classroom setting, in which students have full access and opportunity to participate. To engage in a confidential conversation about the process for requesting reasonable accommodations for this class and/or program, please contact the Academic Student Success Manager at 505-662-5919."
UNM-LA employees who require accommodations may contact their supervisor and the Academic Student Success Manager for support in implementing accommodations for you on campus.
