UNM-LA Tech Frontiers 2014 Application Deadline Extended
The application deadline for Tech Frontiers 2014, the joint venture between the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA), and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), has been extended to June 9.
Tech Frontiers 2014 will offer two, one-week sessions providing participants the opportunity to learn about careers in environmental science or about projects that involve both engineering and science. Students will earn one hour of college credit for each session they attend.
The first session, Environmental Science: The Science Behind the Headlines, runs June 23–27, 9:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. In this session, students will learn from experts at LANL about environmental policy, water and soil safety, modeling climate change, and creating new methods in remediation when things go wrong.
Tech Frontiers 2014 Coordinator, Dawn Venhaus said, “Science Behind the Headlines is not just a classroom lecture. Students will actually get to work with experts from LANL and gain hands-on experience conducting experiments both in the lab and outdoors.”
The second session, Amazing Projects: The Science That Shapes Our World, runs July 14–18, 9:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Students will gain insight into the careers that contribute to projects like the Mars Rover and military drones. Experts from LANL who have worked on these projects will share their experiences while students collaborate on a project of their own.
Venhaus said, “Students attending Amazing Projects will gain a better understanding of how engineers and scientists work closely together to solve complex problems.”
“Both sessions provide a unique opportunity for students to visit LANL and other local laboratories,” Venhaus added.
Students entering their junior or senior year of high school in the fall, or those who graduated this spring, are eligible to apply. Applications for Tech Frontiers 2014 can be found online at losalamos.unm.edu/students/tech-frontiers/index.html.
The tuition for Tech Frontiers 2014 is based on UNM-LA’s one credit hour rate. For complete information about tuition and fees, visit losalamos.unm.edu/students/tuition-and-fees.html. Need based financial aid may be available.
