Accessibility & Accommodations
Mission
To provide assistance and supportto students with verified disabilities in order to provide equal access to educational programs and opportunities. UNM–Los Alamos Student Services is also committed to providing information and support to faculty and staff about best practices in supporting students with disabilities and helping maintain compliance with ADA law.
Key Points
- Accommodations are not automatic. Students seeking accommodations must initiate the process through Student Services.
- Your professors are unable to establish individual accommodations. Students must work with Student Services for accommodations in all of their classes.
- You must provide your course schedule to the Student Success Manager every semester in order to have your accommodations sent to your professors.
- Communicating with Student Services and your faculty will help you be successful and help us support you effectively.
Services Available
- Student Services offers the following services, including but not limited to:
- Test proctoring
- Reading and transcribing for tests
- Regular meetings to check in and offer support
- Assistive technology available for students to borrow
- Text conversions (these can take several weeks—please request these well in advance)
- Collaboration with faculty on implementation of accommodations
- Additional services will be provided as determined by a student’s documentation and evaluation
Establishing Accommodations
To establish your customized accommodations, make an appointment with the Student Success Manager in Student Services. Bring your documentation and/or diagnosis information. This information will verify your disability. Plan to spend about an hour discussing your accommodations with the advisor. The Student Success Manager will then send a letter to your instructors, describing the accommodations for which you are eligible.
Changes to accommodations can occur at any time during the semester. However, they are not retroactive to assignments, tests, or quizzes that have already been completed.
Once you have registered for classes, you must provide a copy of your course schedule every semester to the Student Success Manager to continue receiving your accommodations.
In the Classroom
Once faculty members receive the accommodations letter from Student Services, it is highly recommended that you schedule a time to meet with your instructors outside of class in order to discuss your accommodations and to establish a relationship with your instructors.
The accommodation letter provided to your instructors does not contain any diagnosis information, only required accommodations.
If your accommodations include testing accommodations, you will need to determine if your instructors are available to proctor these tests, or if you will need to arrange proctoring with the Learning Resource Center (LRC). Should you require proctoring services, it is strongly recommended you set up all test dates with the LRC at the beginning of the semester. When this is not possible, you must schedule proctoring services at least one week in advance of your test date.
Permission must be granted by the instructor in order for a test to be taken at any time other than during the same class period that the rest of the class is taking the test.
Tests or other assessments will be provided by the instructor to the Library Resource Center prior to the test time with specific instructions for administering the test.
