Art Studio

At UNM Los Alamos, the distinct disciplines of painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, electronic arts and art history are understood to be closely related and you will begin with a strong grounding in the fundamentals of drawing, history and design. These introductory courses emphasize concepts basic to the entire discipline of art studio. Courses and course sequences are designed to encourage your power of observation and aesthetic awareness. Simultaneously, you will learn the techniques and crafts to use these powers creatively and effectively.

About the Degree

The Associate of Arts in Art Studio is designed to provide you with the first two years of study towards a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (BFA) at the UNM Albuquerque Campus. The Associate of Arts degree program enables students to prepare for advanced study, gallery employment, studio assistant or a career as an individual artist. Other options such as teaching, curatorial work in a museum, free-lance design and management positions are generally achieved with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.

Courses in Studio Art, Art History, Music and Theatre enable the student to develop an awareness of aesthetics and meaning in creating their own artworks in ceramic, paint, charcoal, music and photography. Individual instruction and attention to the development of each student is the foundation and hallmark of our Art Studio program.

The thriving arts scene in the Rio Grande valley and the proximity of artists and artworks to UNM-Los Alamos is a unique educational experience, presenting a myriad of career choices to students.

Our Fine Arts faculty enable students to develop their own voice and perspective in this vibrant cultural setting. Faculty and students interact and learn on a one-to-one basis in the studio and the classroom where digital technology allows us to explore ancient ruins alongside the latest innovations in contemporary art.

What Students Will Learn

At UNM-LA, you will learn to express yourself with your mind, your hands, and your voice. Studying and creating Fine Art helps us understand that imagination is an infinite source of content. Art is an important part of our lives and touches us through music, film, video, pictures, fashion, and everything that humans create. Understanding Fine Art will help you to see the relationship of your creative nature to the life you live.

Career Opportunities
