1. Call to Order, Confirmation of a Quorum

2. Routine Business - Council Action Items

a. Approval of College Council Meeting Minutes – May 7, 2024

i. Motion made by Peninah Wolpo to approve the minutes. Motion passed.

3. Announcements

a. Ivette Jimenez reminded everyone to clean up after themselves in shared spaces, particularly in the kitchen of building 6, which is not under contract to be cleaned.

b. Peninah Wolpo made a call to fill the non-exempt staff position for College Council.

c. Grace Willerton announced that the UNM-LA Job Fair is happening this Thursday, October 3rd and encouraged the community to attend.

d. Grace Willerton indicated that a work study position in Student Services has been posted.

e. Beth Rue announced that UNM-LA will be hosting a campus wide Open House scheduled for 10/29/24 from 4:30 pm- 6:30 pm which will include a ribbon cutting for the grand opening of building 6. There will be tours, program demonstrations, and highlights of developments at UNM-LA.

f. Mike Holtzclaw provided updates as they pertain to facilities. We are currently in the process of renovating restrooms and expanding machine shop and welding in building 5, as well as renovating building 8 for ceramics and art studio. Reported gas line repairs should be complete by the end of the month. This fall we will be installing all new LED lighting and putting a new roof on building 2. Recently installed all new HVAC units. Renovations for the Open Space are projected to begin in January and end at the beginning of summer.

g. Kristian Godt reported that Student Government is making progress on the ideas for the student lounge space.

h. Mike Holtzclaw advised that if you are employed by UNM-LA, you cannot tell people to vote for the bond. There are two bonds; Bond 3- GO Bond supports improvements at institutions. Bond 3 does not raise taxes. The other bond is a new bond in which we are required by state law to come up with 25% of that ask with local money. Explained the limited sources for local money and the implications. Informed everyone that all information pertaining to the bonds is posted on the UNM-LA website. 

Celebrations

a. Mike Holtzclaw disclosed that he will be gone October 3rd through October 18th due to being selected to participate in the Fulbright program. Danielle Gonzales will be acting in his place.

b. Peninah Wolpo acknowledged and celebrated the writing club among other various clubs on UNM-LA campus. 

4. New Business 

a. Strategic Plan

i. Engagement & Organizational Development consultants, Kate Williams and Bonnie Holmes, presented a roadmap of the goals to the UNM-LA Strategic Plan. They provided an overview of the current state of milestones, the next steps, upcoming milestones, and an overview of the working groups. The three identified goals are 1. Enhance & Engage Our Community 2. Invest and Develop Our Campus 3. Improve Student Experience & Outcomes

ii. Kate and Bonnie will be working and meeting with writing groups individually following the training.

iii. Writing groups will report a formal progress update at the November College Council meeting with the final Strategic Plan delivered in December.

b. Bylaws revision

i. Peninah Wolpo called for College Council to review and revisit bylaws from last spring.

ii. Former Chair, Coco Rae, clarified that the proposed bylaws revision was voted on and approved by College Council members in May.

c. Retention initiatives

i. Grace Willerton expressed interest and curiosity as to what other departments do for student retention and would like to collectively explore better ways to communicate with students.

ii. Grace Willerton motioned to create a subcommittee for retention. Motion passed.

iii. If interested in joining the subcommittee, please email Grace by 10/14/24.

d. Challenges communicating with & engaging students on campus

i. Discussion surrounding UNM-LA social media, where to post announcements for students, the suggestion of a live events calendar, and ultimately finding a cohesive way for how to effectively communicate with students. 

e. Need a Vice-Chair

i. Peninah Wolpo made a call for Vice-Chair for College Council, with anticipation that they will be Chair the following year.

ii. Peninah Wolpo made an additional call to fill the non-exempt staff position for College Council.
