College Council Meeting Minutes - February 6, 2024
1. Call to Order, Confirmation of a Quorum

2. Routine Business - Council Action Items
a. Approval of College Council meeting minutes- November 7, 2023
i. Motion made by Coco Rae to approve the minutes. Motion passed.
3. Announcements
a. Spring enrollment
i. Kathryn Vigil reported an 11.6% increase in enrollment with 1,248 students currently enrolled. Credit hours are also up 8% in comparison to the other UNM institutions.
b. Welcome Back Day & CIC
i. Brittany Carpenter shared successful results from the Welcome Back Day & CIC which occurred on January 30, 2024. Detailed the new business partnerships with UNMLA and students in attendance received hot chocolate, t-shirts and UNMLA swag.
c. New Title V application
i. Anne Jarrett and Cindy Rooney are planning the new Title V grant. They are facilitators for the grant and started a Title V committee. Will have more information to report in subsequent College Council meetings.
d. New Academic Coach & ASC info
i. Irina Alvestad stated that the academic support center continues to provide support in math and English. Academic coach, Jennifer Armstrong introduced herself, and disclosed the variety of services she provides. She is located in the ASC 6 hours a week on campus and 4 hours online.
e. Selection of Nathaniel Sandoval to the Phi Theta Kappa All New Mexico State team
i. Irina Alvestad recognized Nathaniel Sandoval who was selected as the Phi Theta Kappa student. It is a high honor to be selected and Nathaniel will be presented and recognized at the state legislature on February 13, 2024.
f. Update on Renovation Projects
i. Mike Holtzclaw provided detailed updates on the renovations happening in building 6 which they hope to be completed in April. Informed everyone that faculty and staff offices are furnished and ready to be occupied this spring. Described the full upgrade of restrooms, offices, classrooms, new furniture and LED lights. Anticipating building readiness for classes this summer.
ii. Mike Holtzclaw described the Open Space Project which focuses on the reconstruction
of the stairs, building an ADA approved parking lot,
redoing the entryway, and building and designing the courtyard area. Start date for
this project is undetermined at this time.
iii. Mike Holtzclaw communicated plans to replace the flooring in building 2 as well as redoing the painting and lighting and eventually adding new audiovisual in the lecture hall as part of phase 2. Bob Harmon added that they will be replacing HVAC units and the roof in building 2.
g. Other
i. Grace Willterton announced that the Career Center is now offering drop-in hours for students and providing a few career readiness workshops in preparation for the career fair. In collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, UNMLA will be hosting a career fair this spring.
ii. Kathryn Vigil thanked the students in attendance for their participation in College Council.
iii. Brittany Carpenter announced that LANL representatives will be on UNM-LA campus Thursday, February 8, 2024 at 2:00 pm in the lecture hall of building 2 for internship opportunities and to recruit student employees.
iv. Sandy Jones shared that on February 19, 2024 UNMLA will be hosting an artist workshop in the lecture hall that will be open all day to student and faculty artists. Peninah Wolpo will share invitations. Everyone is invited.
v. Kathryn Vigil indicated she has a meeting with Los Alamos County that is proposing a collaboration with UNM-LA to host a lecture and presentation by well-known poet and author, Jimmy Santiago Baca. Details to come.
Celebrations
a. Years of Service
i. Mike Holtzclaw recognized UNM-LA employees for their years of service and awarded them with UNMLA pins. Those not in attendance of the meeting will be able to pick up their pin from Kelley Garrett.
b. Other
4. New Business
a. Student Lounge discussion
i. Kristian Godt presented on behalf of UNMLA Student Government, the vision for the Lobo Lounge. He detailed the drawing and layout of the space, explained the purpose for the space, projected a timeframe for it to be completed and open, and welcomed questions, comments, and suggestions.
b. Strategic Planning update
i. Kate Williams from Employee Organization Development, presented the strategic plan update for UNMLA. Announced the survey results and indicated actionable next steps for forming working groups centered around thematic areas which will be combined to draft a strategic plan. Drafts will be brought to College Council for feedback.
