Associate of Science in Environmental Science

Do you enjoy working outdoors? Are you concerned about the future of our planet?

Designed for students passionate about the natural world and environmental stewardship, the Associate of Science in Environmental Science provides a strong academic foundation for further education in areas of environmental research, conservation, or public policy. This program provides students with the first two years of study toward a bachelor’s degree in environmental science or Earth and Planetary Science at UNM Albuquerque Campus or other four-year institutions. As a terminal degree, it is sufficient preparation for certain technician jobs in areas such as environmental testing and remediation.

This two-year program combines foundational coursework in biology, chemistry, geology, and environmental science. Through hands-on lab work, field studies, and critical analysis, students explore topics such as ecosystems, climate change, pollution, sustainability, and natural resource management. The program emphasizes scientific reasoning, data interpretation, and environmental problem-solving—skills essential for today’s environmentally focused careers.

Experiential Learning

The core science classes for this degree include laboratories in which hands-on learning makes science concepts come to life.

Specific activities include:

  • Measure pH and dissolved oxygen levels in water samples
  • Accurately read topographic and groundwater maps
  • Analyze graphical data from global environmental monitoring systems for rainfall, vegetation, and other physical features
  • Evaluate a variety of energy resources for environmental risk factors

Faculty Expertise

Your instructors in the Environmental Science degree program have master’s degrees and PhD’s in their subject areas. Most have years of work experience in their field and are passionate about teaching and mentoring students. They are knowledgeable professionals who are dedicated to student success.

Career Opportunities

There is a great diversity of occupations in the environmental sciences, requiring degrees ranging from the associates to bachelor’s and higher. Jobs include investigating and monitoring pollution sources, developing environmental cleanup and remediation plans, and advising businesses and governments on environmental sustainability. Overall employment in this field is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations over the next ten years. The median annual wage for environmental scientists was about $50,000 for an associate’s degree and about $79,000 for a bachelor’s degree in 2023, both higher than the median annual wage.
