Description
This course is an introduction to the history and practice of the interdisciplinary
field of art and ecology. Students will investigate artistic practice, political ecology,
environmental justice, and the interrelationships between cultural and ecological
systems. Through readings, discussion, lectures, and projects, we will explore how
art can respond to–and make meaning within–the context of climate crises, mass extinction,
colonialism, extractivism, and beyond. In order to expand the space of possibilities
for thinking/feeling/making, this course aims to identify and to challenge distinctions
between art and science, theory and practice, knowledge and affect.
