Frequently Used Databases

Academic Search Complete - Academic Search Complete, designed specifically for academic institutions, is the one of world's most valuable and comprehensive scholarly, multi-disciplinary full-text database, with more than 5,300 full-text periodicals, including 4,400 peer-reviewed journals. In addition to full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 9,300 journals and a total of 10,900 publications including monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc. The database features PDF content going back as far as 1865, with the majority of full text titles in native (searchable) PDF format. Offered through EBSCOhost.

Expanded Academic ASAP - general index to articles across many disciplines from arts and the humanities to social sciences, science and technology, this database meets research needs across all academic disciplines. Access scholarly journals, news magazines, and newspapers - many with full text and images! Offered through Gale.

ProQuest - general index to articles across all academic disciplines. Searches may be done across the entire database or within specific disciplines. Many articles are full-text.

With extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects, Academic OneFile is both authoritative and comprehensive. With millions of articles available in both PDF and HTML full-text with no restrictions, researchers are able to find accurate information quickly. Includes full-text coverage of the New York Times back to 1995. Updated daily. Offered through Gale.

APS (American Periodical Series) Online - Over 1,100 periodicals that first began publishing between 1740 and 1900, including special interest and general magazines, literary and professional journals, children's and women's magazines, and many other historically-significant periodicals.

Applied Social Science Index and Abstracts - ASSIA - An indexing and abstracting tool covering health, social services, psychology, sociology, economics, politics, race relations and education in 500 journals published by 16 different countries for social science and health information for the practical and academic professional. Offered through Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.

ArticleFirst - index of articles from the contents pages of journals (some full text). Click on "List All Databases," then select from the resulting list. Offered through OCLC FirstSearch.

British Periodicals - British Periodicals Collection I consists of more than 160 journals published from the 17th century to the early 20th century.

EBSCOhost - Menu of 34 separate databases across many disciplines (abstracts and full-text).

ECO - a collection of scholarly journals (some full text). Click on "List All Databases," then select from the resulting list. Offered through OCLC FirstSearch.

First Search - menu of 13 separate databases indexing articles across many disciplines (mostly abstracts). Offered through OCLC.

Fuente Academica - Fuente Academica is a unique collection of scholarly journals from renowned Latin American and Spanish publishers. This multi-disciplinary database offers full text content to many academic areas including business & economics, medical sciences, political science, law, computer science, library & information sciences, literature, linguistics, history, philosophy and theology. This database provides full text (including PDF) for 260 scholarly Spanish language journals. Offered by Ebscohost.

General OneFile - A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Millions of full-text articles, many with images. Updated daily.

Google Scholar - Although Google Scholar is a free search engine, this link connects you through our proxy server (requests your UNM NetID/password) to take advantage of the linking features. GoogleScholar will link to some - not all - of the online journals to which the University Libraries subscribes as well as many other resources. Use the "Check for UNM Full Text" link to see if the article is available through a UNM subscription. Before doing a search, click on "Scholar Preferences." Under "Library Links", put "University of New Mexico" in the "Find Library" box. We also suggest that you check the box for "Open WorldCat." This will better ensure that you get access to those materials to which the University Libraries subscribes.

MAS Ultra - School Edition - Provides full text for 460 general interest and current events magazines. Offered through EBSCOhost.

MIT Press Journals - More than thirty titles in many subject areas, including the arts and humanities, social sciences, and certain areas of science and technology.

Oxford University Press Journals - 196 titles in life Sciences, Mathematics & Physical Sciences, Medicine, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Law, and including some of the most authoritative journals in their fields. 1996-present (unless the title started later.)

Periodicals Archive Online: Collections: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII - More than 500 journals covering international, scholarly literature in the humanities and social sciences in 37 key subject areas. Offered through Proquest/Chadwyck-Healey.

Popular Magazines - includes 1000 of the most searched magazines across InfoTrac products. This database is 100% full text and includes titles such as Consumer Reports, Time, National Geographic, The New Yorker, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, US News and World Report, Vogue, Fortune, Business Week, National Review, Cosmopolitan, NPR and Oprah. Offered through Gale.

Project Muse Â  Project MUSE originally offered online access to 46 Johns Hopkins University Press titles in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics. Muse has been expanded to include full-text online access to titles from other university presses. To date, nine other presses have committed more than 60 titles to joining Muse, bringing the total to over 200 titles. The publishers involved are Carnegie Mellon University Press, Duke University Press, Indiana University Press, MIT Press, Oxford University Press, Pennsylvania State University Press, University of Hawaii Press, University of Texas Press, and the University of Wisconsin Press. Offered through the Johns Hopkins University Press. Full-text articles are available.

Readers Guide Retrospective (2 concurrent users only.) - A bibliographic database containing comprehensive indexing of the most popular general-interest periodicals published in the United States between 1890 - 1982. Subjects include aeronautics, archeology, business, education environment, film fine arts, health, history, journalism, medicine, music, politics, popular culture, science, technology, and more. Covers 1890-1982. Offered through HW Wilson.

Sage Journals Online - SAGE publishes journals in Business, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science, Technology and Medicine. Limit your search to the "SAGE Content available to me" for available full text.

Serials Directory - provides access to the most up-to-date and accurate bibliographic information as well as current pricing structures for popular serials. It contains over 182,500 U.S. and international titles, including newspapers; historical data for an additional 20,000 titles; data from over 85,000 publishers worldwide, including e-mail and Internet addresses; and library of Congress and Dewey Decimal Classifications for every entry.
