The University of New Mexico (UNM) Los Alamos branch invites applications and nominations for an experienced leader to the position of Dean of Instruction (Chief Academic Officer) of the UNM Los Alamos Campus reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer of the Campus.  The position is a 12 month administrative position carrying faculty rank.

UNM-Los Alamos is located approximately 90 miles north of Albuquerque and the main UNM Campus.  It is one of four two-year branch campuses of UNM and is designated a Minority-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education.  The enrollment of approximately 1000 students includes fifty-seven percent minority students and fifty-five percent female.

UNM-Los Alamos is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association and offers transfer degrees, career technical certificates and degrees, adult education, community education and workforce development training, and a large range of dual credit programming in conjunction with area high schools.  Los Alamos has a population of approximately 18,000 and is a county seat of the two population centers of White Rock and Los Alamos. Los Alamos is located on four mesas of the Pajarito Plateau. Los Alamos is home to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, established in 1943 for the Manhattan Project.


The Dean of Instruction is the College’s Chief Academic Officer with overall responsibility for leadership and administration of the instructional programs and the faculty.  Approximately 94 full-time and part-time faculty are fully engaged in the shared governance system. The Dean also oversees approximately ten staff members and numerous non-credit instructors related to the library, Academic Support Center, Community Education, and Adult Basic Education. The Dean is a member of the Campus Executive Leadership Team providing overall guidance to instructional activities of the campus under the leadership of the Chief Executive Officer.

The Dean’s Leadership responsibilities include (not limited to):

  • Encouraging and facilitating excellence in teaching, scholarly pursuits, and service to the college and the community, with a special emphasis on student success.
  • Academic strategic planning, development and oversight of the instructional budget, and ongoing review and assessment of all programs of the college. 
  • Working closely with the leadership of the faculty and the Main Campus Office of Academic Affairs to oversee a Promotion and Tenure system and academic personnel processes.  
  • Promoting educational innovation including instructional technologies through the college service area.
  • Encouraging faculty development and administering the Faculty Professional Development Fund.
  • Working to build close relationships with Deans and Department Chairs of academic programs on the Albuquerque and other branch campuses, serving as a member of the UNM Dean’s Council under leadership of the Provost.
  • Maintaining close working relationships with area public schools, the national laboratory, the business community, and others to ensure the on-going relevance of academic programs to the needs of the community.
  • Ensuring all faculty recruitment and hiring processes are effective and compliant with current policy, regulations and laws.
  • Overseeing the Academic Support Center, the Library, Adult Basic Education, and Community Education.
  • Overseeing all aspects of the academic curriculum and course offerings including, but not limited to, the creation of all schedules of classes as well as the creation and editing of the course catalog.
  • Overseeing all faculty, academic department and program chairs, Office of Instruction staff, and academic support services.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution
  • Five years of experience in a tenure track appointment at an accredited institution
  • Three years of administrative experience related to the duties and responsibilities specified
  • The ability to qualify for tenure and a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at UNM-Los Alamos

  • Overseeing a university Promotion and Tenure system, including annual reviews of faculty, and faculty goal setting
  • Supervising faculty who hold continuing and contingent appointments, including tenure stream, long term lecturer contracts, and adjuncts
  • Developing and overseeing complex instructional budgets including programmatic funding, for example grants (private, state, and federal) and experience administering these funded activities
  • Curriculum Development, Student Learning Outcomes Assessment, and Program Review
  • Overseeing successful use of applications of instructional technology including e-learning, distance learning, and classroom/curriculum management systems
  • Developing and implementing Technical and Professional Programming leading to a Certificate or Degree
  • Working collaboratively with other areas within a higher education institution, including student services, business operations, and others
  • Working collaboratively within a branch campus system
  • Working collaboratively with local businesses, schools, governments, and the community at large to identify and meet educational and workforce needs
  • Strategic enrollment management
