Personal Self Defense

This self-defense class is drawn for the martial arts style of Kai Sho Do. In English it would be called Open Hand Martial Arts, referring not only to the fact that the style teachers many open-handed strikes, but also to its philosophy of nurturing peace, love, and kindness, symbolized by an open hand (as opposed to a closed fist). Students will gain fluency in a variety of strikes, blocks, and kicks, and will learn to recognize certain types of attacks, as well as how to counter each one. Physical strength and coordination are not prerequisites, though the class will be quite active. Although there will be no sparring, students will work together to help one another practice the material. There will be guided meditation. Self-defense is more than just about keeping oneself safe from harm: it is also about maintaining and developing one’s physical, mental and emotional health.
